In a world in which female intellect was still a taboo, many female writers adopted male pseudonyms in order to progress. One of the most fascinating cases, though, was the poet Michael Field, aka Katherine Bradley and Edith Cooper. The aunt/niece duo not only collaborated on poetry collections and verse dramas; they also cohabited as lesbian lovers.
Nothing could be more apt, then, than their reworking of Sappho in the collection Long Ago, which reasserts the lesbian identity of a poet seized by male Victorian writers to appropriate heterosexual ideas.
