With the snow falling outside it seems the weather itself is welcoming the arctic themed pop up film festival which is coming to Leeds next week.
The festival will be taking root at Temple Works Leeds cultural venue and listed building for two days which will see the return of the popular Future Shorts film programme plus a special Arctic film night with a Finnish and Canadian screening.
The Arctic film evening will have flavoured vodkas, Finnish pasties, hot chocolate and a even a saw player; whilst Future Shorts will have a special Kinopolitan cocktail, and music from acoustic folk musician Grant K Fennell. A treat indeed!
The festival, called Kino, has been organised by two super inspired and hard working Temple Works’ interns Maisie Roberts, a Leeds University graduate from Berlin, and Jenni Ervasti here on an Erasmus scheme from Finland.
Future Shorts is a program of six short films including BAFTA award winner The Eagleman Stag, Oscar winner The God of Love and Sundance winner Deeper than Yesterday. It is from the makers of Secret Cinema and screens sporadically all around the world.
The Arctic cinema evening will focus on a Finnish film and features Makku Tuurna’s emotionally charged film, Salla: Selling the Silence. It is a creative documentary that sees the rise and fall of a family of entrepreneurs from Salla, Lapland, alongside the changes in Finnish society. It asks questions about planning, and development, how to combine those with the natural landscapes of our hometowns and is said to be surprising, sometimes sad, sometimes absurd in a black Finnish way. There will also be a surprise but film from an award-winning Canadian Inuit director.
Finally on Valentines Day there will be a special 1940s themed evening including a screening of the classic love story Brief Encounter with music, cakes, cocktails and a 20 per cent discount from the West Yorkshire Playhouse costume department on production of a ticket.
