Rent Musical

Rent gay musicalRent is a 2005 film adaptation of a Broadway musical of the same name and is one of the few musicals that I can watch over and over again. The film follows a group of 8 interconnected individuals living in New York under the shadow of AIDS over the period of exactly one year. The film retains a lot of it’s Brodway roots with 6 original cast memebers reprisng their roles in the the film, including Broadway superstar Idina Menzel.

The principal characters of Rent include:

– Joanne and Maureen, a lesbian couple trying to overcome the jealousy in their relationship

– Angel and Collins, an MIT professor and a drag queen comitting to eachother throughout their battle with AIDS

– Roger and Mimi, two drug users and lost souls struggling to admit their feelings for one another

The songs are all very catchy and range from the silly and fun Today 4 U, peformed by Angel in a Mrs. Claus outift to the poignant No day but Today by Roger and Mimi about the shortness of life, the recurring Seasons of Love (below) is Rent’s signature song has become an anthem for HIV/AIDS awareness and has even been covered by Stevie Wonder and Donny Osmond.

Wow, great review! A friend gave me this as a gift once, and I still love it. It’s not for everyone though; I know many people who have not liked it but for me, it’s great.
