Sugar Rush (TV Series)

Sugar Rush was a British TV series broadcast on Channel 4 based on the Julie Burchill novel of the same name. The program ran for 2 series between 2005-2006 spanning a total of 20 episodes.

The drama centres on Kim Daniels, who moves from London to Brighton at the beginning of the first episode, coming to terms with her sexuality. Her self-discovery is catalysed by Sugar, or Maria Sweet, a local girl who Kim almost immediately falls for. Sugar is one of those girls we all know; beautiful, popular, powerful and always gets what she wants.Lesbian TV drama Sugar Rush

Sugar consistently teases Kim, leading her on only to let her down when it counts. Unrequited love and disappointment are major themes in Sugar Rush and you are constantly asking yourself will they?/wont they?, you’ll have to watch it yourself to find out, which you can do for free here on 4od.

Despite popularity with viewers and critics alike, the series was unexpectedly cancelled after the second series without much explanation being given, rumours abound that it was to make way for Big Brother (I know which one I’d prefer!) but Channel 4’s official line is that the story had simply ran it’s course.

Sugar Rush was groundbreaking in its time and was certainly the first TV series whose main character was a lesbian that I remember, it may not be as glossy as The L Word or as sexy as Lip Service but Sugar Rush was a charming piece of TV that told a very important story.

The first series of this show was brilliant, Kim did some great pieces straight to camera and has a lot of fun with an electric toothbrush! Then there was such a change in story for series 2, that it just didn’t seem as believable anymore.

Saying that, the cheating Mother, dipstick father and brother who paints himself blue are all comedy gold.
